Edit: Oct 28 - painting has been slightly tweaked, photograph updated and happily ArtistsForCharity :iconartistsforcharity: have accepted it as a print for their gallery!

Ref was the photograph [link] by Narry, :iconhilandernarry:, and my painting it was suggested by Malachai :iconthermalraven:. I dont think I would have dared try if he hadn't suggested it. Malachai himself has an incredible gallery with many photographs of children in Africa, so I think I may try another. I like the idea of a series of these children. Naturally, if I ever sold anything connected with them, the proceeds would have to go to where it is most needed.

Now that I got that out...(that was directly after a long flight, by the way) this is such a strong piece...and definitely not over the top by any stretch, just competently and sensitively executed.

You have brought through the same raw energy seen in your other works, but sophisticated the blending and lighting to a degree where you have made a serious turn in the road. By accentuating shadow much more sensitively, this piece is concerned with texture, surface quality and illusion of depth while maintaining a high level of emotion.

The colors alone are beautifully created and combined, notwithstanding the great finish that this promises to deliver once completed.

Phew, that's a relief then!

Thank you so much for this wonderfully encouraging feedback, Denis.

It's funny because I thought it was finished when I submitted it, but now I realise it isn't...I mean I realised before you alluded to it.

Welcome back - I hope you had a really good trip.

What threw me a curve was the v1, v2 and v3 (2b).

It works just fine as is, if that is where you were taking it. Sometimes it's good to move on to the next piece.

But if you were inclined to add anything at all, I would go along with Bryon's intuitive comment to tie the so-called negative space, or background as it were, into the work with more definition and variation as you did in the figure.

Another option, of course, is to de-accentuate the background with a solid neutral color and perhaps add a hint of depth with very light and subtle shading. Just a thought and nothing more.

Great work as always Robbie. (Trip was great too.)
Understandable., of course and although I was definately influenced by Bryon's invaluable feedback, I just used colour to connect the two. I do want to do something else with the background, will see where it goes, as my initial ideas rarely stay until the end of a piece.
I think the t-shirt could probably benefit from a little more detail too.

Thanks again, Denis.

I hope you will tell us all more about the trip when you've had a chance to settle back in. :)

well, then I will wait for the final version to put in the favorites.
Excellent work Robbie - I think the colours are so beautiful. I feel that the foreground/background has been resolved in this version and despite the fact that you are concerned about overworking your paintings, I think this is an excellent example that you can work on a painting without destroying it ;) I love the skin tones even more than I did in the last submission. You've added more depth to the features with the tonal changes you made.

Bravo!
