Peace and Love and Glue

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 12, 2009, 12:45 PM
PEACE & LOVE

A word about the new avatar: I just grabbed it from a protest on facebook about the attacks on the people of Gaza, as I wanted to show my heartfelt support for the people there and my absolute objection to what the Israeli government is doing to them.

Some of you might have noticed I was using the 'For Gaza' logo that matched the graphic I submitted last week for a few days, but because I had problems with the message that accompanied it, I felt much happier with this one.

GLUE

Well I thought I was actually going to finish a painting for you very soon, but I have managed to tear a big hole in it and it will need quite a drastic reworking. I think I know how I will tackle it, but I also punched a small hole in Jimmy Garrison a while back too, (while unscrewing a bracket that held the canvas in the frame) and havent repaired that yet....so I thought it would be a good time to ask if anyone has experience of repairing such holes and what you recommend if you have.
I've read up a bit: a patch of canvas on the pack is clearly necessary, but how best to attach it? I've seen rabbit skin glue and acrylic glue recommended and yesterday I read of putting waxed paper on the patch, melting the was from it into the patch using a cool iron, then securing it in place with a weight for 24 hours - which sounded nice - especially as they said it should be beeswax, but as the big slash on the painting is directly behind the central strut and there is no way I'm going to take it off the stretcher thingy, that's not an option.

I'm thinking I might try the rabbit skin glue, I've never used it, but gather from :iconhypertom: that its great for base layers to sand down when making the surface of a canvas smooth, so it would be good to have some (although I'm a bit concerned about whether it's smelly as my place is small and not fantastically well ventilated in Winter).

I could probably get away with any fabric and glue combination really, but it's made me kind of anxious. Maybe the trauma will make me more careful in future!
Now I'm over the initial shock though, I'm quite excited about seeing what I can do about it!

:icondenis-peterson:. If you haven't see the clip of Denis Peterson's interview on FOX, please check it out, [link]

If you are moved by it, you may also find Emmanuel Jal's story will touch your heart. CNN's coverage of him is very good: [link]

I would also recommend a visit to :iconthermalraven:'s gallery, to put things further into perspective.
